We’re not in the business of mandating dress codes here at Vogue, but if we had to apply a rule for New Year’s Eve, it would be sparkle. Crazy sparkle. When else do you get the chance to wear a lamé minidress, glitter eye shadow, and bedazzled boots all at the same time? Of course, it helps that there are so many ways to sparkle in 2018; the runways have been caked in glitter for a few seasons now, from Saint Laurent (in an ultra-sexy, ’80s-ish way) to Simone Rocha (a quirkier kind of shine). If you’re pressed for time—or just can’t justify head-to-toe metallics—a light-reflecting accessory can get the job done, too. On the jewelry front, there are Dries Van Noten’s stacked-up cocktail rings, Ralph Lauren’s layered heirloom necklaces, and Gucci’s nipple-grazing earrings—or consider a glitzy boot, like Christopher Kane’s crystal-studded pair or Miu Miu’s party heels. Celine and Rodarte made the case for sparkling veils and hair accessories, too.
Givenchy’s Fall 2018 couture gown with its cropped jacket, silver sequins, and feathered trim mixes classic shapes with a little fun. January will kick off what is sure to be a thrilling awards season beginning with the Golden Globes, on January 6, and culminating with the always-anticipated Academy Awards in late February. As celebrity stylists begin pulling their racks and racks of fresh-off-the-runway couture gowns, one can’t help but make his own wish list for what Hollywood’s top talents will wear. Who doesn’t dream of an over-the-top fashion moment, after all? With that in mind, we’re looking to the runway for some clues as to what might be seen on Los Angeles’s best red carpets. The question is: will today’s starlets embrace the theatrical silhouettes found on recent catwalks? Zendaya has already stepped out in Marc Jacobs’s tiered, feathered frock from his Spring 2019 show, but will others dare to wear the designer’s poufy shapes? One can also hope that a star—perhaps a risktaker such as Lady Gaga, Globe-nominated for A Star Is Born—will look to British designer Matty Bovan’s recent Spring collection, which had multi-layered ball gowns galore. If daring shapes are too daunting of an idea—with a worldwide audience watching, there’s always a certain pressure to play it safe on the step and repeat!—stars also have loads of bold color to embrace. At Pyer Moss’s Spring show, for example, a silk gown in a deep tangerine shade would look just smashing on Regina King, nominated for a Globe for If Beale Street Could Talk. At Valentino’s Couture show, Pierpaolo Piccioli sent out taffeta gowns in every color of the rainbow, all accentuated by crafted floral headpieces. (Again, they scream Gaga.)
As the year draws to a close, we’re in reflection mode here at Vogue Runway. What really mattered in 2018? We covered the year’s most trending shows, the biggest news in street style, and a few ways fashion tried to make a difference—but the most impactful stories were hiding in plain sight on our Instagram page. Many of the most liked, most trending posts help illustrate 2018’s big talking points, from the royal wedding to ugly shoes to ’90s nostalgia. There were a few surprises, too—particularly the Instagram that earned the No. 1 spot. Reviewing our top nine list, it became clear that one thing drives double-taps and shares: people. Some of these people are super-famous, of course: Royals continue to perform on social media, from past icons like Princess Diana to the highly influential Meghan Markle; then there’s fashion royalty (like David and Victoria Beckham), music royalty (Katy Perry), and the kids who are the future of fashion (like Desmond!). Above, scroll through all nine of the year’s most trending moments, and follow @VogueRunway in January for our coverage of the first shows of 2019.
