You could say it was serendipity that led Sea’s Sean Monahan and Monica Paolini to open their first store on Canal Street. Industry types who are familiar with the label will also be familiar with its longtime studio on Canal—a dreamy, expansive space on the fifth floor of a nondescript building in between Mercer and Church—with no elevator. To picture Monahan and Paolini anywhere else was sort of impossible; that space mirrored the low-key, vaguely bohemian vibe of their collections, and there was something charming about the un-fancy zip code. In the past year, though, things began to change: Roman and Williams Guild opened across the street, and a string of empty spaces on Canal got a facelift thanks to United American Land, which tapped artists and designers to open pop-ups. Then, the space on the ground level of Sea’s building opened up, so they jumped at the chance to move their studio—and the airy front room seemed like a no-brainer for a store. It opened a couple weeks ago, and it’s arguably the first legitimate designer-led fashion shop to open on Canal. While the address might have seemed risky for other brands, it felt natural to Monahan and Paolini. “We couldn’t picture opening a store anywhere else,” Paolini says. “We didn’t even look in Soho or the West Village.” They gutted the entire space, whitewashed the walls, and filled it with wildflowers and elegant, low-key furniture by Fort Standard, Vonnegut/Kraft, and Grain, all picked up from their neighbor, Colony. It’s beautiful and inviting—and it will no doubt inspire other brands to consider the area as Soho rents continue to skyrocket and that “northern Tribeca” neighborhood becomes more elevated. (Along with the Guild, Beth Bugdaycay’s gorgeous Foundrae store is just around the corner on Lispenard Street; a couple blocks away, there’s La Garçonne and a few more furniture and design shops.)
